The Fine Family Interview

Author Keren TraubPosted On August 18, 2025

Families Share Their Gratitude for Jewish Caring Network

The Jewish Caring Network has touched countless lives in Baltimore, providing comfort and support during some of the most difficult times. Families share their experiences of how JCN was there for them when they needed it most.

The Fine Family’s Story

In December 2024, our baby arrived three months early, weighing only a pound and a half. We spent four months in the NICU, and during that time, we lived at the Tikva House because we lived an hour away from the hospital.

The accommodations were incredible—our room felt like the nicest suite in a hotel. We had food every single day, every meal, and the warmth of being treated like family. The staff and volunteers visited daily, davened for us, and ensured we had everything we needed. They went above and beyond, and we will never forget it.

One of our biggest concerns was how we would manage Shabbos while staying near the hospital. Before we knew about the Tikva House, we worried about being too far away and not being able to see or advocate for our baby. But once we discovered that it was directly across the street from the hospital, all those worries melted away.

The Tikva House wasn’t just convenient—it was beautiful. We had everything we needed, from a kitchen to comfortable beds, and the hospitality made us feel at home. We are forever grateful to JCN, Shiffy, and Karen for the kindness and generosity they showed us during such a challenging time.

A Lifeline Through Medical Crises

Jewish Caring Network has been there for our family through multiple medical crises. When my parents faced health challenges—and even in my own treatments—JCN always showed up. Whether it was meals, rides, or gifts, their support made an enormous difference.

For my daughter, the Shabbos meals and birthday gifts meant so much. She remembers the packages that would arrive at our door—challah, cookies, and thoughtful surprises that reminded us we weren’t alone.

JCN truly transforms something difficult into something beautiful. From hospital packages to volunteer support, every gesture made our lives a little easier.

Twenty-One Years of Support

For more than 21 years, JCN has been there for me, helping with nursing care, meals, and anything else I needed. Their dedication to my family has been unwavering, and I cannot thank them enough for always being there.

Walking Through a Long Illness

When my husband was sick for ten years, JCN carried us through. At the time of his diagnosis, some of our children were grown, but five were still at home—ranging from ages 15 down to 8.

The Jewish Caring Network provided us with meals, retreats, emotional support, and even big brothers and sisters for the children. They gave us financial assistance and, most importantly, the reassurance that we were never alone.

My youngest doesn’t even remember her father healthy, but she does remember the support JCN gave us. That speaks volumes about the impact they had on our family.

Stories of Healing and Comfort

At the annual JCN 5K Run, families celebrated not only the event but the continued legacy of care JCN provides. One young woman shared how, when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at age 21, JCN supported her recovery with gift cards for meals and massages, weekly food deliveries, and constant encouragement.

Another family described the joy on their children’s faces whenever a special package arrived at the door from JCN. In their home, those deliveries became symbols of hope, relief, and love.

A Community of Caring

Time and again, families spoke of how JCN changed their lives:

  • Meals and Shabbos support during long hospital stays.

  • Birthday gifts and holiday packages that brought joy to children.

  • Volunteers and events that reminded families they were not alone.

  • Emotional and financial support that carried them through years of hardship.

The Jewish Caring Network continues to stand as a pillar of compassion and strength in Baltimore, helping families not just survive challenges, but find light and beauty in the midst of them.
